Jim Collins wrote the best material I have ever come across about this in his book, Good To Great. He talked about the "Hedge Hog" concept. He conceives of three circles: what drives your economic engine; what can you be best in the world at; and what are you passionate about. Where these three circles intersect Collins suggests should be your core business.
